Where you from? Manila, Philippines. Can you remember the first time you picked up a guitar or any musical instrument? What's it like? It was a strange experience! I picked up the guitar when I was 7. It was my dad's Yamaha folk . I really had no idea how this instrument worked but for some reason I just felt this very deep connection the moment I laid my hands on it. I took that sensation for granted, though. 3 years later I realized what that feeling meant. It was a special one. I knew I had to learn to play it. My brothers initially learned to play basic guitar but later on Melvin suddenly had an interest in drumming, as well as Richard in playing the bass guitar. How about song writing when did you learn to write your songs? I was 12 when I first wrote a ballad. Is there a particular genre in your music? any bands or artists that influence your music? I grew up listening to rock music so I guess the foundation of my style is within that genre. As the journey went on, however, I became interested in blues, and then jazz, and then soul/R'n'B. Recently, I've been listening to classical music. These particular artists laid the groundwork of my style: Eric Johnson, Richie Kotzen, Jonny Lang, Hendrix, SRV, Doobie Brothers, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Wes Montgomery, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Toto, Sade, The Police, Fourplay, J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Igor Stravinsky. They are my main heroes. I mainly write for the band but I let my brothers contribute as well. I can hear a lot of Larry Graham and Pino Paladino in Richard. Melvin, on the other hand, is more into contemporary rock drumming such as the styles of Carter Beauford and Chad Smith. When you write your songs or create your music, what are your inspirations? There are 4 of them: (1) Nature, (2) State of mind, (3) Convictions, (4) Art as a whole. They give me endless inspiration and ideas. Do you have any achievements in your music before that you would like to share? I received 'best guitarist' awards a couple of times in competitions before. What are you up to these days? any upcoming events or gigs and perhaps an album or EP?:) We try to focus more on songwriting lately, as well as improving our musical skills further. The album will have to come out soon! Do you have any plans on taking your music to the next level? We try to push ourselves as much as we can. It just feels amazing when you listen to sublime compositions and productions. We want to reach that level someday. How long you been in Dubai? and what can you say about Dubai? Been here for two and a half years. My brothers have been here since 2002. I love the multi-cultural environment. I hate the summer heat! What do you do besides music? any hidden talent? I'm into poetry, fine arts and a little bit of philosophy; Richard's into drawing; Melvin's into quarelling with our youngest sister all the time. We play basketball together! Any word of wisdom and encouragement to those who will be reading your profile? The art of music has been granted the luxury of freedom right from the beginning. The liberty in musical expression and interaction is a very beautiful gift. I think it is the unnecessary subdividing of genres that separate everyone from this privilege. Some have even closed their ears heavily to the point that music is pressured by forcing it to hit a particular market. This is an evolution in the industry which further yields to yet another artistic revolution. Having an open mind is the challenge among artists as open ears are to its listeners. Do you have anything to say about Dubai Lime? or anything that you would like us to do to encourage local musicians? Dubalime is a gift especially to local artists and audiences alike! |
