Music Gear Review - SolidTube by AKG |
|
The SolidTube from AKG is a cardiod condenser tube microphone with an external power supply. The power supply has a ground lift switch for eliminating ground loop hum and there is a 20db pad switch on the microphone itself. This microphone runs circles around the others in its price range when recording vocals, especially bass and mid ranges. It sounds absolutely fantastic.
So, buy this microphone if you want a very warm, comforting sound, but not if you want to show all your mates your new expensive microphone, because frankly, you would do better with a well sculpted model, for a tenth of the price.

My only problem with this microphone is that it is not the best looking piece of kit in the world. It has a small window into the side where you can see the tube glowing which is the only good looking part of it, but the rest of the microphone is very bulky and looks very budget. The worst part is probably the yellow foam windscreen that comes with it. Although there is never really a need to use it, AKG could have at least made it black. Other than its looks it is a great microphone for vocals and I recommend it to anybody that wants to add some beautiful tube warmth to their recordings.
